"Zoneout"

ODG197 : Adam Majdecki-Janicki / Zoneout

Adam Majdecki-Janicki (1985) is a multi talented Polish artist with a penchant for creating mind-bending musical landscapes. His music is a captivating fusion of psychedelic rock, experimental sounds, and poetic lyricism, taking listeners on a journey through a kaleidoscope of emotions. With his DIY ethos and unwavering passion for music, he is a force to be reckoned with in the underground music scene.

He has previously released his work on labels such as Nebular Silence, Superspace Records, Engram Recordings, Illuminated Paths, Silent Method Records, Snow in Water Records, Father and Son Records and Tapes, attenuation circuit, Anticipating Nowhere Records, Fifth Section Records, nostalgie de la boue, Muteant Sounds (net label), Veinte 33 Records, Boiled Angel Records, Herby Records, and Argali Records Netlabel.

After 25 years of artistic work, his debut vinyl LP titled simply “Adam Majdecki-Janicki” was released with Herby Records on December 9 2023. It is a beautiful limited release with exclusive artwork by Justin Jackley.

In 2024, Adam is entering his 26th year of operation as an artist.

His new album, “Zoneout”, sees Adam exploring his more psychedelic and improv side. He uses primarily acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, and synthesizers, but also utilizes tapes in the spirit of his 2020 “Eimi” album complimented by Maurizio Bianchi himself. The music is a curious mixture of Kosmische Musik, noise, and folklore. Traces of drone and ambient can also be detected, as well as traces of free jazz, and punk.

“Zoneout” was recorded live January 31-February 5 2024 at the Via Kosmische home studio in Poznań, Poland. Only first takes were used for the final album experience.

“Zoneout” is a fine addition to Adam's long catalogue of works, and a fresh look at what is now 26 years of work as an audio artist.

Digital release on the 15 of November 2024.

Neon Nocturnes / Treehouse Jams

As the year comes to its end I find myself working on two new works - one is a set of ambient synth soundscapes "Neon Nocturnes". These improvisations are drone / New Age based and are both for meditation and active listening. I started working on them after listening to Igor Stravinsky in the record store where I currently work. So, there will also be classical music influences audible. But, the work won't be classical, and obviously I haven't forgotten about my noise / experimental roots when it comes to electronic music. You can listen to parts 1-6 on SoundCloud, and the project will be released soon. The idea is to fill the other half of the album with non-related pieces, abstract, and free form.

The other project is free rock-based improvs for electric guitar, bass guitar, and drum machine. It's called Treehouse Jams quite loosely, and I am not sure if those pieces will be released on an album. It all depends on the quality and quantity of them. I released many rock-based improv albums before, so I am not sure if there is need for another one. But I really enjoy playing around with the new drum machine, and playing my guitars. So, here is to a happy creative 2024 - the sound research at Via Kosmische goes on! Here is the Treehouse jam, and below a link to order my vinyl LP from Herby Records.

Adam Majdecki-Janicki, better known as A.J. Kaufmann, is a poet, songwriter and musician residing in Poznan, Poland. He is one of the most important figures in the Wielkopolska underground, an artist associated mainly with the independent scene. His musical activity should be of particular interest to fans of psychedelic music. He is the author of several dozen albums, released physically and digitally. Outside the country, the artist successfully debuted with the well-received collection of poetry entitled "Siva in Rags", published in 2008. Important achievements in his output are also the first album released on CD and vinyl "Second Hand Man" from 2011, as well as the album "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" in 2014.

25 years of madness - the LP.

The news is finally here. After 25 years of artistic work I will have my debut vinyl released in Texas, USA, by the most incredible label - Herby Records.

Herby has supported various projects of mine, including the STONED GYPSY WANDERER 2 vinyl release in 2020, NEANDERTHALMEN EP "Powitanie Lucyfera" in 2021, and the CHICA NARCOTICA LP in 2022.

All of those releases are kindly credited not only to HERBY RECORDS, but also to VIA KOSMISCHE, my home studio in which most of my recordings were made across the years.

I can't believe it all started in 1998 with a simple cassette recorder, shaky teenage voice, and a classical guitar.

“Kaufmann is a folk troubadour, minstrel and a harbinger of new sounds and thought. There is a theme that runs through this body of work, a method to his madness. All of these songs are a journey. So take the trip and give a listen. Nobody knows it but AJ Kaufmann is a national treasure of Poland.”

by David Bixby, Harbinger Magazine

To those in-the-know, Mr. Dave Bixby is certainly a Hero. So, to be called a national treasure by him is the greatest honor I can imagine.

I always worked hard, and never stopped making music, noise, writing poetry, composing, improvising, writing song lyrics, even against the hardest currents of Life.
I worked alone for 4 years, then in 2002 I started working with Mateusz Nowicki, 10 years later (2012) with Kacper Wojaczek, and another 10 years later (2022) with Leszek Garstka.

I never enjoyed big ensembles, groups, the noise around rock'n'roll. Although I've always been a fan of Hawkwind, Amon Duul, Gong, Magma, Nektar... the list goes on.

In 2015 I met the mighty Amon Duul II in London. It was a life-changing experience, and I will be eternally grateful to Renate Knaup who invited me backstage after the London gig. I met everyone, talked to everyone, got to know what makes music important, and understood why some things grow fast, and sick, and some things grow slow, and strong and healthy...

SO FINALLY, after 25 years that most of my friends think I spent smoking ganja and drinking beer, not working hard in my home studio, my debut vinyl as ADAM MAJDECKI-JANICKI (self-titled, too) is coming to HERBY RECORDS December 9th. Right now you can buy the super limited 7" single ANITA PALLENBERG / HOTTHOUSE FOR ORCHIDS.

"Bard's Woman in the Cool of the Summer Breeze" CD/Digital, The Swamp Records, USA - pre-order starts today.

Hello, for many people my best album is "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer", originally recorded 2011-2014, released in 2014 with Kendra Steiner Editions on limited CD-R, and in 2021 on vinyl with Ramble Records on limited (200) vinyl. Well, that might change today.

My best ever album, recorded with many friends, is available now for pre-order. If I were to recommend you all a good place to start with my poetry and music, it would be this CD.

We recorded my voice and old acoustic guitar (a Chinese Fender) in a rehearsal room at Gwarna Street in Poznań, Poland. Patryk Lichota (who also produced and arranged "Utopian Fields" for the album) was at the controls.

The album is short, it's got 10 songs on it, but there is no filler material. Each song features a special guest, from places as faraway as Indonesia, USA, the UK, or Germany (well, Germany's not that far away - and I have another pretty good album coming, recorded in collaboration with robvisual, a Hamburg-based photographer, VJ, DJ, and music producer - but more on that when the time is right...). Each artist featured elevated my really personal recording to a whole new level. Without those guests, the album would be just a poetry with acoustic guitar recording. Perhaps too simplistic and personal for any (even limited) commercial purpose.

Anyway, the album is here, released with The Swamp Records, USA, and I'll post all the links related to it in this post when they appear. The official release date is February 14 2023, but don't worry, you can listen to selected tracks right now (January 13 2023).
And, of course, pre-order the album at https://ajkaufmann.bandcamp.com/album/bards-woman-in-the-cool-of-the-summer-breeze

Enjoy!

[gelöscht] - VERFÜHRERVERGELTER

If battery powered blackened electronics and raw ambient melancholia from Potsdam, Germany, sounds like something for you, why not go deep into the world of VERFÜHRERVERGELTER with this brand new album, "Gelöscht".

"Gelöscht" means deleted. Deleted from memory, from life, from death, from form - but still alive somewhere, on another plane of existence and sound, if "alive" is the correct word when describing death industrial.

But, don't let the genre narrowmindness get you - in the 9 untitled tracks (including intro) that comprise
"Gelöscht" there is lots of more colors and flavors one would expect from industrial or from ambient.

Yes, I have a problem with "industrial music" and "ambient" in the XXIst century, as they drift dangerously into pop and techno zones. But right here,
VERFÜHRERVERGELTER comes to the rescue.

Instead of the "techno umpa-umpa" of modern "industrial" and "lo-fi chill beats" of "ambient", we get landscapes of Kluster-like meanders, early BBC experiments, noise, improvised music, Italian futurism, and modern electroacoustica experiments. I have visited Potsdam at least twice, and I can also hear lots of Potsdam in the LP. If you have ever been to Potsdam, I feel you'll appreciate the LP on another level as well. It's elegant as the location it was recorded in, and the cover artwork.

The album is also really solid, coherent, well thought and performed and recorded/produced - this is exactly the kind of sound I think of when imagining "industrial". I don't know how
VERFÜHRERVERGELTER does it, but the album is not only dark and menacing, but also beautiful. I think the strength of this release lies in the contrast of beauty and the beast, the common archetype in art, but here executed perfectly and with a knowing of craft, structure, lack of structure, and tradition. It's modern and ancient, dark and radiant.

I recommend this album to everyone who's into experimental music, not only industrial or ambient - and this has been my first review of an album in 7 years - I never thought I'll do "music journalism" again after writing for Psychosonda 2014-2015. Maybe it's not even a "real review" just a note to accentuate the release and help
VERFÜHRERVERGELTER get some well-deserved exposure in the www world.

To summarize this note, or review, I'd like to present a bit of text from the Artist himself, where he explains the creation of "Deleted":

"I had to find a way to put the unspeakable into words. This is how I did it. I recorded this Album in the first half of 2022 and finished it in August 2022. At the beginning I just tried to recreate to sound of my first Demo. But after one-too-many recording sessions, I realized that this wouldn’t satisfy me. What I had so far was dark and intense. I tried to get to the source of that sound and found a locked room inside me. The songs of [gelöscht] are my interpretation of what is hidden away in that place. What has no name, what hides away from description. What is deleted but still acting and affecting me in my life."

Yes, it's impossible to delete existence. Enjoy the sound of
[gelöscht].

PINK ELEPHANT MUSIC™

In December I have begun releasing a series of albums on the A.J. Kaufmann bandcamp under the common title "Pink Elephant Music". There are 2 volumes released as of today.

Here's Volume 1:

PINK ELEPHANT MUSIC is improvised music, psychedelic music, krautrock, and Polish punk - which blended together are exactly what they are - "pink elephant music". It is the music I feel in my soul, and want to share with you the feeling of creativity, joy, and fantasy. I always had it in me.

I was busy with PINK ELEPHANT MUSIC ever since I can remember, but the name was suggested to me in 2002 or 2003 by an older friend (don't remember his name), who listened to my tapes with Mateusz Nowicki and declined joining us telling me that "that's pink elephant music". He couldn't feel the vibe, and the vibe was really foreign then (and still is) to Poznań, Poland.

But, with the new album series I hope to make this sound more accessible to a wider variety of people, not only globally, but also locally. Maybe you'll dig the vibes and original ideas, which we had here in the Górczyn high rise since at least 2002, and I was already writing first songs in 1998. That's 25 years next year... I was 13 when I started writing songs, and I will be 38. Age is not even a number. My old friends no longer play Pink Elephant Music, but some people still do. In fact, we could form a nice band together were it not for fate which often messes with me and time. We always pass each other and say this and that, but when it comes to recording, I am most often left alone.

If you're curious, I guess the first outburst of this creative juice was listening to a Velvet Underground album at the age of 12, then Amon Duul II and Hawkwind age 15, and finally Manilla Ungol age 17. Also, Polish punk - especially Moskwa, Ewa Braun, Ścianka, Brygada Kryzys, Dezerter, Kabanos etc etc etc... everywhere in between those ages. Mateusz Nowicki and his bass and organ and voice were helpful in 2002, and Kacper Wojaczek and his keyboard and voice in 2012.

Keith Hadad of Record Crates United recently interviewed me about the beginnings (and other things, too!) but if he was to ask me about PINK ELEPHANT MUSIC, he'd get (almost) completely different answers. Everything is relative and space is endless, and I strongly believe one man has more than one story to tell. But, for 2023, I will only have 2 stories. One of them will be the album "Bard's Woman in the Cool of the Summer Breeze" and the other PINK ELEPHANT MUSIC. I'm not sure how many volumes will be there, but I have 5 prepared. Volume 3 and 4 will be definitely coming this year. The rest of the updates in 2023. Stay tuna.

EIMI album with its emotional galactic atmospheres that describe scenarios of decadent desolation. A masterpiece in the genre. (MAURIZIO BIANCHI).

Adam Majdecki-Janicki, Eimi (release date: 06/18/2020).

Adam Majdecki-Janicki offers outstanding music, like an archive noise, an open breath on a film from another era. An experiment that makes sound a landscape, a sound/space continuum.

Yuri Morozov is the great inspiration, the clever and resourceful electronics of these studios piercing the solitude of the bands and official orchestras. There is no commemoration in this tribute to the great Russian composer. Perception alone, the memory of a burning film, a stalker in search of a mirrored universe. Adam Majdecki-Janicki makes textures-cassettes, sound worlds buried in the memory of a sky full of stars.

Eimi, or the open sound of a walking talent.

***

"Stoned Gypsy Wanderer" in the Ears and Eyes of Others (Updated)

A.J. Kaufmann: The Stoned Gypsy Wanderer

Poland’s undisputed chief psych-out poet laureate A.J. Kaufmann releases whatever the hell he wants because he’s like the Jandek freak folk psych-master of Poland and he just keeps releasing quality material…more than 100 in 10 years in fact.

A.J. has also released more books of poetry than Rimbaud, Blake and Walt Whitman combined. Imagine having that sort of output and talent? Ramble is over the moon to be releasing the long-lost rarity The Stoned Gypsy Wanderer and let’s hope you are one of the lucky ones to snap it up because it’s destined to become a psych masterpiece.

The Stoned Gypsy Wanderer is two parts Syd Barrett, a smidge of the Butthole Surfers, a cup of Country Joe and the Fish with Chrome at the console. On the words A.J might be channelling André Breton and Baudelaire but his surreal-laded lyrics belong to him and him alone.

Comes with original cover artwork by Justin Jackley (Austin, Texas), complete with lyrics.

(Mike Sill, Ramble Records, 2021).

"When I first listened to this album, the thing that stood out the most is the wonderfully classic aesthetic to the recording of each track. Yes, there are a variety of influences at play here including psychedelic folk and garage rock. But the constant thread between all of them is an encapsulation of the era to which it calls back.

Listening to it is like jumping into a well-crafted time capsule taking you back to the era of bands like Jefferson Airplane and The Doors with a raw sound that lets the elements of each composition shine through whether they combine into the complexity of tracks such as "Wine of Rape" and "Whispering Egypt" or the simplicity of a guitar and voice in tracks like "Amaranth Blues" or "Stoned Gypsy Wanderer."

This is the album where you can make yourself a cup of coffee, light up something special, and let yourself zone out to the reverberated guitars and psychedelic aesthetic."

Lars Haur, On The Fringes of Sounds, Dec 9 2021.

"Hailing from Poznań, Poland, A.J. Kaufmann puts his wide array of influences on his sleeve on the multifaceted Stoned Gypsy Wanderer.

Featuring a wide array of sounds with everything from 80s-flavored garage rock to rustic psychedelic folk, Kaufmann is in full flight on this record.

At times Kaufmann conjures up the weird acid folk stylings of the likes of Perry Leopold, especially on the opening track “Berger,” while at others, Kaufmann rocks out with a surreal and macabre atmosphere, like Robyn Hitchcock or The Dukes of Stratosphear.

The best moments on the album are when Kaufmann leans further into the astral folk side of his aural spectrum. Just take a listen to the Pearls Before Swine-like “This is Not New York,” and just try to not get caught up in its spell.

Dreamlike and fascinatingly versatile, this is an album that you won’t soon forget."

Record Crates United Oct 1, 2021.

“From the first multi-layered seconds of the opener (which sounds like Robyn Hitchcock on steroids sitting in with Country Joe and the Fish if they’d been doing DIY recordings in 2014), we’ve got a first-rate collection of 14 new and diverse psychedelic anthems…..all with interesting chord progressions and the kind of lyrics worthy of a poet….some have a trippy singer-songwriter vibe a la Dino Valenti or John Wonderling….others offer kaleidoscopic swirling ships of sound in the “Scream Thy Last Scream” vein…and post-60s influences such as Scary Monsters-era Bowie or the Psychedelic Furs are swirled into the mix…along with the DIY genius of someone like Bobb Trimble. ”
(Kendra Steiner Editions, USA)

“Several of the album’s 14 songs have a vocals and acoustic guitar driven acid-minstrel quality that reminds me of the Bevis Frond, though like Nik Saloman, A.J. has his own sound. Representative tunes include Amaranth Blues and the title track, plus the majestic C.O.K.E., with its screaming guitar, and I love the trippy, mind-bending effects that augment This is Not New York and Slavia Nova. There’s lot of variety too. I love the jangly yet endearingly dissonant Folk-Psych of Berger. Crown Of Things is a darkly Gothic, droning Acid-Pop song with lysergic guitar lines that weave a snake-like trail amongst the catchy melody. Wine Of Rape is a hauntingly seductive slab of Psychedelic Prog-Pop, with organ, piano and orchestration. There are also songs with a high energy rocking feel, and even some that are whimsically fun. Still Within gushes with spirited Psych infused Folk Rock and ripping electric guitar fills. A.J. goes totally trippy on the equally energetic Whispering Egypt, with its wildly wah’d freak guitar, haunting organ and spaced out mesmerizing vibe. I like the lively, Celtic tinged Veil Of Isis and the bouncy In a Blue and Violet Morning. Iceberg has a stoned, trippy, carnival-like rhythmic pulse, horn section, and jabbing keyboard notes. And Operation is the most different track of the set, having a quirky New Wav-ish rocking feel that reminded me of an early 80s Bill Nelson song. Stoned Gypsy Wanderer is a captivating set of songs which mine the Psychedelic, Folk and Prog realms and are then stamped with A.J.’s own personal touch.”
(Aural Innovations, USA)

“This new album by AJ Kaufmann is stunning….it’s got many different styles, all equally well handled… it compares to the best things Julian Cope has done.”
(Brad Kohler, USA)

“Fourteen delicious songs from Poland: DIY and homely, urgent but not repelling, in a multicolored solitude, full of bizarre suggestions, including electric and acoustic guitars, basses, synths, toys, programming and voice, thinking of an urgent solitaire in mood of Warhol’s Factory – think of Dylan, think of Barrett, shake your “Screamadelica” shakers. The ensemble sounds like a solar and not too brutal Julian Cope, on a Sunday domestic blow (some old sixties’ garage 45s playing in the background). Very fresh and pleasant.”
(Kathodik, Italy)

“STONED GYPSY WANDERER, unlike much of what labels itself “psychedelic” today, is NOT a revival work… it SOUNDS like a 2014 recording and is forward-thinking and forward-sounding, but it has all the independent spirit and originality and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink low-budget raw production and fully-formed-style-from-seemingly-out-of-nowhere that one finds in the best and the biggest-ticket private press psych masterpieces. ”
(Kendra Steiner Editions, USA)

“The lyrics are mystical beyond belief, the performance ranks with the best late-sixties productions one could have found on Warners, and Kaufmann himself is a world class talent who recalls a whole buncha past while presenting it in the here and now. And the best thing about it is it hardly if ever gets twee!”
(Blog to Comm, USA)

“Witajcie w artystycznym świecie Adama Jana Kaufmana.
Topiący się w psychodelicznych delayach „This is Not New York” – kawałek, który po prostu trzeba zaśpiewać w którejś z kawiarni Greenwich Village.
Kończący album, niepokojący zapis snu w postaci „Slavia Nova”. Myślę, że spokojnie przygarnąłby go Ivo Watts-Russell. Wystarczyło go nagrać w innym czasie i w innym mieście.”

(Psychosonda, Poland)
